Independance Day Celebration Reception
at the War Memorial in San Francisco - June 13th, 2005
The Annual Philippine Independence Day Reception for the Bay Area Filipino-American community was hosted by the Philippine Consulate General last June 13 at the Green Room of the San Francisco War Memorial.
The event was attended by close to 400 guests, including Fil-Am community leaders, state, city and other officials, and media personalities. Consul General Maria Rowena Mendoza Sanchez delivered a message paying tribute Philippine revolutionary heroes and exhorting overseas Filipinos to unite in helping the Philippines achieve political and economic development.
Distinguished guests, including California State Assembly Speaker pro Tempore Leland Yee and former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, congratulated the Filipino nation and acknowledged the lasting friendship close working relations between the state and local governments and the Fil-Am community.
Cultural presentations, including an intense rendition of two Filipino love songs by world-renowned Filipino tenor Noel Velasco, and an exciting dance number by Cecille Cardenas, were loudly applauded. The Chorale of the Philippine Consulate General, however, got the crowd on its feet and wildly cheering with an electrifying number, øMalaya Ka Na, Pilipino!Ó
