Bay Area Pinoys Cast Their Votes in 2007 National Elections

Mr. Antonio Menchavez, a 63 year old native of Cebu who is currently a security officer at the Philippine Center building in San Francisco personally delivered his ballot to the Philippine Consulate General during the first day of elections which was received by members of the Special Ballot Reception and Custody Group or SBRCG including Consul Anthony Mandap, Mr. Cesar Cruz, and Mr. John Jiao. Mr. Benedict Gutierrez also designated as a member of the SBRCG received the first ballot sent by mail from Mr. Martin S. Ong from Stockton, California.

The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco expects 4,842 ballots to be sent its way since this is the number of overseas absentee voters who registered during the registration period.

Consul General Maria Rowena Mendoza Sanchez said, “We hope that all our kababayans who registered will indeed vote and vote wisely during this election period. I assure all our fellow Filipinos that we will carry out our duty as election officers with the utmost professionalism and dedication.”

 “I ask our kababayans here in the Bay Area to start mailing your ballots so that they will get to us in time because all ballots received after 12 midnight of May 13, 2007 Pacific Standard Time will be considered invalid,” she added.

The election period in the Philippines officially closes at 3:00 p.m., May 14, 2007 in Manila which is midnight, 13 May 2007 in San Francisco. The COMELEC has announced that all ballots received after this time will be considered invalid.

The counting of the ballots will officially begin at 12:01 a.m. on May 14, 2007 and this will be conducted by members of the Consulate who have been duly designated as Special Board of Election Inspectors.
