| DOST Accepting Applications for Balik-Scientist Program for 2008 |

The Department of Science and Technology recently announced that it is now accepting anew applications for the Balik Scientist Program (BSP) for next year.
The Program, established in 1975 to encourage overseas Filipino scientists and technicians to return or reside in the Philippines and share their expertise in order to accelerate the scientific, agro-industrial and economic development of the country, has among its priority areas for the 2008 program the following: alternative fuel, biotechnology, information and communications technology, pharmaceutical and environment.
Applicants can avail of the long-term program which has a duration of two years in the case of a balik scientist and three years in the case of new graduates; or the short-term program which has a duration of one month. This year, the short term program is no longer limited and can be availed of several times by a visiting scientist.
An applicant must be in good physical and mental health, with a graduate degree and have practiced profession for not less than 3 years after obtaining his graduate degree and preferably working with the private sector, a reputable R&D institution or in the academe. He must have made an outstanding contribution in his field of specialization. No experience is required of new graduates but his field of study must be consistent with the S&T priorities promulgated by DOST.
An awardee for the long-term program will be entitled to, among others, roundtrip airfare for him, his spouse and two minor dependents, reimbursement of freight expenses, housing and grants-in-aid for approved R&D projects. A short-term program awardee will be given free roundtrip economy airfare and a daily subsistence allowance of US$150 a day.
