Filipino American Community in the Bay Area and Northern California Unite to Condemn “Desperate Housewives”
Filipino-American community and leaders in the Bay Area and Northern California held a meeting and forum on 9 October 2007 at the Social Hall of the Philippine Center to discuss issues arising from the remarks made against Filipino doctors in the ABC Television series “Desperate Housewives.”

The gathering provided a venue for Filipino community to gather thoughts about the implication of the unfavorable lines not only to the Filipino medical practitioners in the United States but to the entire Filipino community as well.

While ABC has issued a public apology on the issue, the group also discussed suggestions and remedies to prevent similar occurrences in the future and in taking steps to maintain the good image and excellent record of Filipino health care professionals all over the world.

Consul Wilfredo Santos, who represented Deputy Consul General Antonio A. Morales, urged Filipinos to “stay focused and remain united in protecting the credibility of all other professionals of Filipino-American descent.” Among those who spoke at the event were: Dr. Carmelo Roco, Atty. Rodel Rodis and Atty. Ted Laguatan.

They called on Filipinos in the San Francisco Bay area to get other people involved to support and attend a protest rally to condemn the racial slur at the Union Square on Saturday, 13 October 2007 at noontime.
           
Ms. Marivic Bamba, Regional Chair NaFFAA Northern California, and Mr. Ben Menor, a community leader were the forum moderators.
