The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco invites all to the public screening of “A Moral Debt,” a 30-minute documentary film on the lives of Filipino-American veterans during World War II. The free screening will be held on December 7, 2007 at 6:00 pm at the Social Hall, 5th Floor of the Philippine Center Building at 447 Sutter Street, San Francisco, California.
The film stars US Congressman Bob Filner, US Congressman Tom Lantos and US Army Major General Antonio Taguba. It also features two women of significant roles during the era – Ms. Dorothy Dowlen who witnessed the execution of her British father and Filipina mother in the hands of Japanese solders in the Philippines, and Ms. Magdalena Leones, the only Filipina World War II veteran who was awarded the Silver Star medal for bravery. Surviving Filipino WWII veterans in San Francisco are also featured in the documentary.
The film was made to raise awareness on the continuing struggle of Filipino WWII veterans for recognition of their military service to the United States. It aims to gain public support for the pending legislation on Filipino Veterans Equity Bill in the 110th Congress, and serve as a channel to allow a better and wider understanding of the issue.
A Q&A to discuss the best methods of creating public awareness of the pending bill will conclude the program. Light refreshments will be served.
