| Filipino American Joins San Francisco Marathon for Books for the Barrios |
|
Bannering the slogan “Save Books for the Barrios,” a Filipino American from the Bay Area will be running the San Francisco Marathon on July 29, 2007 to raise funds for Books for the Barrios.
Filipino American, Ramon Arellano II, a native of Angeles City and Marikina City, and an IT specialist with AT&T, will run his first full marathon in San Francisco to benefit the Books for the Barrios. Through the run, Mr. Arellano seeks to raise awareness among Filipino-Americans in the Bay area about the importance of quality education and the role of Books for the Barrios in helping to address educational needs of school children in remote and underprivileged schools in the Philippines.
Mr. Arellano is driven to help raise funds for Books for the Barrios because of his belief in the empowering role of education for the Filipino youth. He stressed that “through education comes empowerment and through empowerment comes the liberation from poverty. Something we, as a nation, truly need in order to continually progress.”
“A lot of children, including Filipino-Americans, growing up in the United States have overflowing blessings. I want my two kids to share their abundant blessings and to be compassionate with their neighbors who are kids like them,” he added.
As of this writing, Mr. Arellano has raised $2,775.00 through his website www.firstgiving.com/SaveBftB and further invites other benevolent donors to visit the website and give their share in support of the cause.
Books for the Barrios (www.boobksforthebarrios.com) is a non-profit organization based in the Bay Area dedicated to strengthening elementary education in the Philippines. It is in need of funds to continue the over 25-year program of educational assistance to the Philippines. |
