"Congressman Tom Lantos . . ."  Supports theImmediate Passage of Filipino Veterans Equity Bill

San Francisco, 01 June 2007 – Philippine Consul General to San Francisco Maria Rowena Mendoza met with California Congressman Tom Lantos (D-CA-12) today to discuss a number of issues concerning the bilateral relationship between the Philippines and the United States and to build on the partnership of the consulate with members of the U.S. Congress.

During the meeting, Congressman Lantos reiterated his full support to the Filipino Veterans Equity Bill of 2007 (H.R.760) and affirmed his strong commitment to continue promoting the interests and rights of the Filipino American community in the U.S. Congress.

Congressman Lantos offered his assurance that he will ask and convince other members of congress to support H.R.760 and inform them of the importance of this legislation and the immediate passage of the bill.

Congressman Lantos enthusiastically said, “I support the Filipino veterans bill 100%, and I will continue to write letters to my colleagues in Congress and encourage them to become co-sponsors of this import legislation.”  Consul General Sanchez thanked the congressman for strongly supporting the Veterans Equity Bill and for continuously partnering with Filipino community and championing their issues and concerns in Capitol Hill.

The meeting also included discussions on other topics, such as: migrant workers rights, environmental issues, domestic issues in the Philippines and the growing overseas Filipino population in the U.S. and in other countries worldwide. The veteran legislator and senior congressman represent around 80,000 Filipino Americans residing in the County of San Mateo and the Southwestern part of San Francisco County. Congressman Lantos praised his Filipino American constituents for having admirable values and traits and for being good members of the community.

Present during the meeting were Filipino war veteran David Tejada, Field Representative and Liaison to the Filipino community Christine Padilla from the office of Congressman Tom Lantos and consulate staff member John Jiao from the Political Section.
