Congressman Wally Herger Conveys Support for Filipino World War II Veterans
San Francisco, 01 June 2007 – California Congressman Wally Herger (R-2nd District) conveyed his support for Filipino World War II veterans by agreeing to take up the pending Filipino Veterans Equity Bill (HR 760) with Congressman Bob Filner upon his return to Washington DC after the congressional recess. He gave this assurance during a meeting with Philippine Consul General to San Francisco Maria Rowena Mendoza Sanchez at his district office in Yuba City last Wednesday.

Also present in the meeting were Consul Wilfredo Santos, San Francisco Veteran Affairs Commissioner Regalado Baldonado, a Filipino World War II veteran, and Ms. Fran Peace, District Director of the Office of Congressman Herger.

“I would like to thank Commissioner Baldonado and all the surviving Filipino veterans of the Second World War for their services to the United States and for their contributions to the defense of freedom. We recently commemorated Memorial Day and it is fitting to honor our heroes for their war time bravery and sacrifice,” Congressman Herger said.

Consul General Sanchez thanked the California Congressman for taking the time to meet with consulate officials and Mr. Baldonado despite his busy schedule. She took the opportunity to discuss also the US-RP Friendship Caucus, whose members
have consistently showed support for the Philippines on Capitol Hill. Congressman Herger expressed his strong interest to join this caucus, which has been instrumental in strengthening bilateral ties between the Philippines and the United States.

“I’d love to do this. Just sign me up for the US-RP Friendship Caucus,” he said.

As Congressman Herger is a strong proponent of a better balance in federal environmental laws and policies, Consul General Sanchez provided him with an information packet on Philippine Biodiversity Conservation. He was also given a copy of the calendar of events of the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco.

“All my experiences with Filipino Americans have been very positive. They are good citizens and a credit to their communities,” Congressman Herger said.
