SF Consulate Celebrates National Arts Month
The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco will celebrate Philippine culture and arts festival the entire February pursuant to Proclamation No. 683 declaring February of every year as National Arts Month. Various activities will be undertaken to enhance understanding and appreciation of Philippine arts and culture, promote national unity and raise pride in the Filipino identity. The celebration likewise seeks to promote Philippine culture and the arts as an instrument for national development and empowerment and an affirmation of Filipino’s inner strength.

With this year’s theme, “Ani ng Sining,” the Consulate has lined-up various activities to increase awareness and encourage participation of Filipino communities in San Francisco Bay Area, as follows:
  1. Art Exhibit - “The Alcala Legacy: Milestone of the Masters,” by Mr. Christian Voltar Alcala and his guest artist, Mr. Franc Reyes. This will be held from 21-23 February 2007 at the Social Hall of the Philippine Center. The event opens on 21 February 2007 at 6 pm at the same location.

    Christian is the son of the late Master Illustrator, Alfredo Alcala, who is internationally known for his works in DC comics and Marvel Comics. Christian is a member of the Cartoonist Across America and the World. He has exhibited his artworks in several galleries and museums in the United States and in the Philippines. Franc Reyes is a comic book illustrator who worked on the comic version of “Tarzan” for DC Comics in New York. He created the character named “Arik-Khan,” in Toronto, and is a layout artist for the Walt Disney Company having worked on the animated feature "Brother Bear".

  2. Book Launching - “Treading through 40 Years of Philippine Dance” by Professor Basilio Esteban Villaruz. This will be held on 23 February 2007 at 6 pm at the Social Hall of the Philippine Center.

    Mr. Villaruz is a professor of dance at the University of the Philippines College of Music and director of the UP Dance Company which has performed in several festivals in Asia. He has served as Chair and Vice-Chair of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, President of World Dance Alliance-Philippines, and Vice President for Southeast Asia of World Dance Alliance Asia-Pacific.
