Citizens from the City of Vallejo held a fundraising activity
for the victims of the Leyte mudslides which struck Barangay
Guinsaugon and other towns in Southern Leyte, Philippines on
17 February 2006 and left thousands dead and missing and scores
of others homeless and destitute. The event was attended by
Consul General Maria Rowena Mendoza Sanchez, Mayor Anthony Intinoli
of Vallejo, Council Member Hermie Sunga and other leading members
the City of Vallejo.
The fundraising activity featured singing and dancing by community
members and leaders. The fundraising drive which began on 23
February 2006 has raised a total of $20,000.00 for the victims
of the Leyte mudslides. Reverend Tony Ubalde who was the master
of ceremonies for the event made the fundraising activity lively
through his style of getting people to donate.
Reverend Rey Bernardes of Global Center for Success, the non-profit
organization which received the funds together with Council
Member Hermie Sunga and others will oversee the disbursement
of funds to the victims of the tragedy. Council Member Sunga
said “We will make sure that the $20,000 will go to the
people that need it the most.”
Consul General Maria Rowena Mendoza Sanchez said “The
generosity of our kababayans is truly overwhelming.”
“I commend the organizers of the event for taking time
out of their busy schedules to organize this wonderful occasion.
Rest assured that the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco
will continue to support you, our kababayans here in Vallejo,”
she added.
