Japan Embassy In Manila Announces Haiku Contest For Filipinos In Rp And Abroad

To commemorate the Philippines-Japan Friendship Year, the Embassy of Japan in Manila, in coordination with the Graduate School of the University of Sto. Tomas, has launched a Haiku Contest: A Call for Pinoy Haiku with a theme: “Pinoy Haiku: Verses for Mother Nature”.

Haiku is a form of poetry that developed in Japan 400 years ago which combines form, content and language in a meaningful yet compact form. Haiku poets write about everyday things. Many themes include nature, and feelings or experiences. The most common form of Haiku is three short lines. The first line contains five syllables, the second line seven syllables. A haiku doesn’t rhyme, it must paint a mental image in the readers’ mind.

The entries may be in Filipino and English. The contest is open to all Filipino nationals living in the Philippines and abroad.

For more information on the contest and to download the entry forms the public is advised to visit the Embassy of Japan’s website at www.ph.emb-japan.go.jp. Deadline for submission of entries is on 2 June 2006.
