The organization Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse
(CORA) co-hosted with Philippine Consul General Maria Rowena
Mendoza Sanchez, Ms. Marivic Mabanag, the first Executive
Director of the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence,
which is a merger of the California Alliance Against Domestic
Violence and the Statewide California Coalition for Battered
Women. Ms. Mabanag assumed her position in January of this
year.
Present during the reception were the members of the Fil-Am
Task Force CORA and community leaders such as Alice Bulos,
Loida Nicolas Lewis, Gloria Navarete, Erlinda Galleon, Lina
Susbilla, Marivic Bamba, Nellie Hizon among others.
During the event Ms. Mabanag spoke on her long experience
in domestic violence prevention. She stated that she would
do all she can to help CORA in its fight against domestic
violence. Consul General Maria Rowena Mendoza Sanchez for
her part was pleased to co-host with CORA a leading figure
of the Filipino-American community who has been championing
such an important cause.
Consul General Sanchez said that “The issue of domestic
violence is a major concern for the Philippine Foreign Service
given that many of our kababayans that go abroad are female
and they are sometimes victims of abusive partners. The Philippine
government will do all it can to ensure the safety of our
kababayans and this includes supporting organizations like
CORA, which aims to help victims of relationship abuse as
well as put an end to it.”
“I am very proud of Marivic Mabanag and I believe that
with her organization working in tandem with CORA we should
be successful in our fight against domestic violence, which
affects not just Filipino-Americans but all sectors of society.”
